Why Do People Get Jealous?
How to control the green-eyed monster
By Dr. Scott Haltzman hitchedmag.com Updated: Jun 24, 2007Question: Why do I get so jealous when my partner talks to other people?Answer: When you first connected with your partner and looked into their eyes, it felt like he or she was the only person in the room. As you get deeper into your relationship and call yourselves a couple, the realization hits you: You and your partner are not alone on this planet. There are others! Are they a threat? When we are in a committed relationship, we assume the connection we have with each other will be strong enough to fend off outside threats. In some ways, this you-belong-to-me-and-I-belong-to-you mentality is sweet; it's the stuff of pop songs and poetry. But sometimes the intensity of that connection is too strong. When one partner sees everyone whom his or her partner comes into contact with as a potential threat, it isa sign that jealousy has taken hold. Shakespeare called it "the green-eyed monster," and once it gets a hold of your relationship, it sinks its teeth in and can rip it apart. What causes jealousy? If you've got strong feelings of jealousy, it's probably a sign that you don't have enough trust in your partner that he or she is being faithful to you. That lack of trust may be prompted by one of four factors.- You may feel insecure about your self-worth. In these cases, either you've been raised to believe, or some part of your inner self feels, that you just don't measure up. Because you don't love yourself, you can't believe that others would love you, so you live in fear that your partner's "true" feelings will be revealed and she will leave.
- You're prone to cheating on your partner -- maybe even have done so. Knowing what you're capable of, you project that behavior onto your partner.
- You and your partner haven't yet figured out how to establish safe boundaries within the relationship. Having a tight bond is about building walls around your love with windows that allow others to be part of it -- not doors where competing lovers can walk right in and disrupt your home. Because you don't know what's permissible within the relationship and what's not, you're constantly on your toes.
- Your mate is cheating on you. Cheating doesn't have to include sex; it often has to do with making emotional connections to others outside the relationship. If your partner is sharing things about your private life with attractive members of the opposite sex, it robs a sense of intimacy from your relationship and leaves you feeling vulnerable.
Knowing the factors that lead to jealousy is an important first step to getting things fixed.Put your focus on building trust. If you've got some growing up to do, therapy may help. Both of you have to learn how to set boundaries in the relationship. That requires respecting your mate's definition of limits of outside relationships from the start.Over time, as trust builds, you and your partner can redefine what feels safe for the relationship. After all, when you've got a great relationship, you want to share it with the world.

Studying? Nah...
So, how do you get a college email account anyways? I've been trying to make a Facebook but they say that I need a college email account first. What a bunch of bologna! (I could only spell bologna because of the Oscar Meyer... or Mayer... I forget). =D Anyhow, I feel quite isolated from all my friends. Which is sad because I should be chatting with them and stuff. At City, I have no friends. Well, I have a bunch of friends in Japanese class.... we're all friends just because we're so cool and we sit in the middle of the class and we laugh at everyone else..... yes... we're bad-asses. hahaha... no no I'm kidding. About the bad-ass part that is.
Work has been killer. Well, not really. More like, killer-boring! There's nothing to do at the PUC. And when there is something to do, it's just photo-copying meaningless shit. Then at Pink, I get tired of standing around for 4 hours straight folding clothes that people will eventually mess up in about 2 seconds. But it's much better than the PUC. I saw Emmy the other day. That was cool. The associates there are nice, but I feel like I'm such an outcast because I'm not perky and white like they are... haha... not to mention that I'm new. But, whatever, I like the free stuff. I live for the free stuff. All hale gratis, ladies and gentlemen. No, really. It is your master!
Anyways, I'm just rambling on and on because I love typing on my laptop. And, I don't want to do any homework. Has anyone been to Westfields and Bloomies? I'm in love! Gotta love the Juicy Couture and Ruehl. Ya dig?! I need some Coach boots and a Ruehl sweatshirt. Not to mention another pair of Sevens and some Uggz would be nice too.
Bye ya'll. Hope college is well. I wonder if xanga is still alive to anybody out there. Maybe it's just for sad little people like me, with nothing else to do but type on their computers because they like their keyboards.

Man.... I'm so tired these days. All I do is go to school and then go to work. My only breaks are Tuesdays and Thursdays in between classes spent with Calros, mainly watching movies and eating. We eat too much... haha... Tommy Toy's.... yummm!!! =D Anyways, I like work, even though it can be busy at times, especially now that it's close to holidays. Oh yeah, if any girls (at least 18) are interested in working at the downtown Victoria's Secrets, let me know because we're looking into hiring for the holidays. Lots of fun! We always have fun. But then it annoys me when people mess up my sweats. My oh-so-carefully-folded-up sweats section. Oh well. That's work for you... tedious... but fun. We get a lot of interesting characters, ranging from shop lifters to rich men shopping for their wives.
I'm tired. Zzzz.... I need to sleep. And I need to get a Facebook... or so people say. I miss everybody. I wish I had time to hang out with you all!!

Orientation was da bomb. Ok... not really. But I was so fascinated by everything and everyone. I was cheesing the whole time. We watched a bunch of tapes from "How to Approach Customers" to "Code*Adam." We learned how to measure bra sizes (something I'm sure the guys must envy... haha). We also signed a bunch of papers.... booooring. I thought I got there late but I didn't.... so that was good. The other girl got there, like, a half-an-hour later than when we were supposed to start. Major no-no.
Anyways, the best part of yesterday was when they gave us our gratis (?), which are our FREE STUFF! I love it!!!! We each got 2 sweatpants and 2 tee-shirts. YAY! Long live Pink! We learned how to fold up panties so that they're nice. We get walkie-talkies and cute bags to carry around with us. My biggest temptation is the stock room filled with Pink stuff. A room with no security cameras. hahah... kidding! But it's so cool being down there. I'm gonna love my first taste of Retail. Come visit me Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1 - 5 pm.
Anyways, it kinda sucked that I had Orientation yesterday because Carlos's dad was having a BBQ so I couldn't make it. Boo.... and I got really hungry in the middle of it all so I had to run around looking for someone place with food on my 15 minute break. We watched Fearless before he had to go. Such a rip-off if you don't mind watching it at home. It's already out on DVD... in Chinese. In the theatre it was all in Mandarin with English subtitles. I was like, wtf?! But I enjoyed it because it was on the big screen and the martial arts kicked ass! I was crying a few times... stupid Carlos.... laughed at me. haha... I get so emotional.
Oh and one more thing.... I finally got my laptop!! Hip-hip-hurraaay for my 12.1" Toshiba. I can't wait to start using it at school and at Carlos's. It'll be awesome... the only thing is.... I'm not really going to be using it all that much. I only need it because it'll be convienent for me... IF and WHEN I really do need it. But, who cares?! It's Window's Vista compatible and it's small. Plus I love the Fingerprint Security!
And that's about it.... I'm trying to get my Employee number and everything but somehow they're not recognizing me. Oh well.... time to get to work! Hope everyone is settling in well in their dorms and new cities!
For everyone else still in the SF, see you at the Bloomingdale opening!!
